Katharina Maria Schaffer
Katharina Maria Schaffer born in 1984 lives in Vienna for more than a decade. She studied artistic photography, object design and architecture. Her works are often based on analogue photographs, which get transported into the digital world. It forms a kind of ornamentation, that can be deduced from detailed image sections. The artist wants to connect what already exists with the presence and hence create “new” formed worlds. Music, literature and nature provide as an inspiration for the artist. Specular reflection and repetition are her artistic mediums. „In philosophy (after Jaques Derrida) iteration is the repetition of a term in the philosophical and social discourse. According to Derrida the meaning of a term changes with every iteration, so that there is no reproduction of the same meaning of a term to the previous one. Each iteration leads in fact to a variation of meanings, that enriches and adds something to the original term.“ The principle of iteration was translated by her into the artistic context, therefore her pictures show perceptions, repetitions, which never reproduce the same meaning. Another connection to her works is formed by the variation of canons, where the direction of the narrative, melody and game can be changed, reversed and reflected.
